T4 -- Totally True Travel Tales
by Heather James
T4 Is an ongoing series of hard-to-believe but true encounters traveling to our signature At-Home closings. For more than 10 years we’ve been taking the closing anywhere that’s convenient for the client – literally anywhere. So, we have unintentionally amassed quite a few crazy stories that didn’t seem humorous at the time, but in hindsight, they certainly offer us a good bit of levity. Like they say, “you can’t make this stuff up!”
Early on, maybe 2007, I was driving to a closing somewhere significantly west of Atlanta. Maybe Carrollton or Douglasville, I’ve blocked that now; but I do remember it was far, about 50 miles. And it started raining, hard. Of course it did.
Anyway, I got a little lost, ended up on a dead-end road and did a fancy little T-turn (because: high school driver’s ed.). Except, I couldn’t see the ditch covered by deep wet leaves. My wheels spun and spun so there was nothing else to do but get out and push. I threw the SUV in neutral, climbed out and pushed.
Note to self: always pack an extra pair of shoes that are NOT heels and preferably offer traction.
I eventually got myself out of the ditch and arrived at the client’s home only 10 minutes late. My skirt, jacket and pumps were a sodden mess and I resembled a drowned rat. But, the good news?
All the closing documents were dry and in impeccable order. And now I always keep a spare pair of sensible, “pushing out of the ditch” shoes in my SUV.
