Kara Cook & Heather James started Cook & James, LLC in 2006. Our firm was founded on the philosophy that there were people out there seeking a different kind of attorney, one who was straight forward, accessible and, yes, even likeable.

Needing a lawyer is a lot like needing a dentist. Usually, it is not a positive situation that brings you to our door. We understand that. We hate going to the dentist too. Therefore, we try to make everything as painless as possible for our clients.

At Cook & James, LLC we measure success in several different ways and this sets us apart from other law firms.

Effective Communication

Believe it or not, we will listen to you and we will return phone calls. It seems like a simple philosophy, but it is one that many attorneys simply do not follow. We realize that our clients actually want to know what is happening with their case or transaction as it progresses. This realization alone, sadly enough, sets us apart from other firms.

When you become a client of Cook & James, you will speak to the attorneys you hire, not to their secretaries or paralegals. While those individuals are very important to running our firm, you hired an attorney and that is what you will get. However, just because you are talking to an attorney doesn’t mean we will talk to you in a language that only other attorneys will understand. We aren’t interested in showing off our ability to recite the latest legal treatise or journal. We are interested in having a conversation with you and showing off our ability to listen, observe and counsel. After all, and easily forgotten, is the fact that “attorney” is synonymous with “counselor”.

Honesty and Hard Work

We cannot promise results, but we do promise to work as hard and diligently on your case as is humanly possible. Yes, lawyers are human too. No matter the number of hours it may take, we will work your case or transaction until it is complete. No loose ends, no unanswered questions.

As much as many of our colleagues hate to admit it, attorneys don’t know everything. Should you ever have an issue that ventures outside of our realm of expertise, we are not afraid to call in the experts. That’s why we have formed a network of professionals to consult, both in and outside the legal field, so that we can always provide you with the best advice and representation possible.

Relaxed Environment

We aren’t just talking about our office space, although we hope you find it to be relaxed and inviting as well. We want to put you at ease from the first phone call to the last meeting and make you feel as comfortable as possible. When you meet with an attorney, you may expect to sit in a stiff leather chair facing a stiff attorney in a stiff black suit. If that is what you want in an attorney, we could provide that for you but we’d honestly rather not. We hope that our less than stiff personalities and relaxed approach are a better suit for you.

Relaxation and flexibility are words that you may not typically associate with a law firm. But we believe that the key to doing a great job is loving your job. That’s why we offer flexible hours to accommodate work schedules and family needs both for ourselves, our employees and, most importantly, you. If you would rather meet with us after work rather than taking time off to meet with us during typical business hours, we will be more than happy to accommodate. Your time is just as valuable as ours.

At Cook & James, we believe our innovative approach to law will make you very happy. Competency is not linked to the rigid confines of typical law firms. They really have nothing to do with each other. Our success has proven that. We are not for everyone, but we aren’t concerned with everyone. We just care about you.
